The answer is simply everything\, for subjectifying inspires spare\, transform ative expression with a sound all its own—a verbal music we don’t know we know until we find it within us like a lovesick troubadour or shaman o r beloved sitting at our kitchen table talking to him or herself. It allow s you as the poet to escape into that person or thing.\n\nMicrocosm and Ma crocosm with Matthew Olzmann:\nPerhaps a poet is attempting to write about a political or social topic where the subject matter is national or globa l in terms of scale. Perhaps the issue they’re investigating can’t be simplified because the stakes are too high. Maybe the story is really a hu ndred stories and to talk about one with depth\, clarity\, or conviction w ould mean ignoring an equally important story. The question I’m wrestlin g with here is “How does one write about something when the subject seem s too big to write about?” This talk will approach that question by exam ining the relationship between the large-scale issue and the smaller compo nents which comprise that issue. We’ll consider how one might be reflect ed in the other\, how the whole might amplify the concerns of the individu al pieces\, and how a narrow focus on a small aspect of a larger story mig ht make the global concerns more tangible.\n\nQ &\; A to follow.
